Distance

"Distance is not for the fearful, it is for the bold.
It's for those who are willing to spend a lot of time alone
in exchange for a little time with the one they love.
It's for those knowing a good thing when they see it,
even if they don't see it nearly enough."

A College Girl's Prayer

Dear Father,

Give me kindness. Take away from me the biting tongue, the cruel intolerance or youth, and give me sympathy. Give me broadness of vision, an earnestness of purpose. Help me, God, to see Thy plan for me; to study and play with that before me. In all things keep me true to my best self, dear Father, help me always to keep my highest ideals and be true to them. Take away any taint of snobbishness, let me be natural, help me to be myself. Dear Lord, help me to live each day as though it were my last.

Give me friends, wise Father, real friends, not flatterers, friends who through life will leave their kindly stamp on me. In some ways, my Father, help me to fulfill my mother's dreams for me, my father's wishes, and above all, Thine own perfect pattern for me.

Amen.

Happy Day

Today one of my littles came to visit me, and it was a surprise. To clarify: it was the best surprise ever. My roommate and boyfriend helped her surprise me, and I feel so blessed to have such amazing people in my life.

I've missed her so much and seeing her was the best thing I could've asked for. I'm just so happy right now, life is good.

Spring Picnic Makeup

Fun fact: I've never done a makeup post before...
Until now.

Unfortunately my webcam is not as high quality as I would've hoped, so I did have to use an editing program to brighten the picture and I had to make these dumb faces so you could actually see my eye makeup (there are two so you can make sure the color editing doesn't ruin it). My sorority has a date dash tonight, but it's outside so it's "picnic themed." This look focuses on the eyes, and is light enough to be outside in the daytime, but still more fancy than your everyday makeup.

This look is pretty natural and simple and I like it because it fits spring very well.
I used the E.L.F. 24 color eye shadow pallet, purple eyeliner, and Mary Kay lash love mascara on my eyes. I used Mary Kay blush, bronzer, and liquid illuminator for some minor contouring.
I used the pink Baby Lips to give me a little bit of lip color.

On my eyes I used a peach champagne color for my base, and used that over the entire lid and up to the brow bone, in addition to dusting the inner corners. I used a light rose pink for the lid. I used a metallic lavender from from the middle to the edge, a darker plum for the crease, and a maroon for the edge.
I only did 3/4 of my upper lash line with eyeliner, and went to under my pupil on the bottom.
I finished up with mascara.

And voila, ready for the picnic!

Looks I Love: Criss Cross My Heart

To be completely honest, I am not much of a fashionista.
Do I love clothes and shoes? Absolutely.
Can I tell you about the designer of the month or what fashion show is happening now? Nope.
However, I can tell you about all of the pretty things that I find on my Pinterest...

My "Looks I Love" board is recently created, but now frequently used. I found this dress from The Mint Julep Boutique and I am absolutely in love with it. I love that it could be dressed up or dressed down pretty easily, and how bright and eye catching the color is. As someone who is always cold, a shift dress with long sleeves would be perfect for my summer job in the air conditioning. It is crisp and clean, but hardly boring. The dress is called "Criss Cross my Heart" because there is a small portion of the upper back with crossing detail. All you need are a cute pair of wedges or Jack Rodgers to make this dress your go-to.

Here Comes the Sun

The grass is green and the sky is blue and there are three classes left in the semester.
I absolutely cannot wait for summer.
Doing the long distance relationship thing isn't going to be ideal,
but I am very ready for some relaxation and consistently nice weather.

It's hard to believe that my friends and I are actually old enough to have "real people jobs" all over the country. At this point, there are only two more New York winters for me before I head down South. I don't feel old enough for all of this. If I wasn't doing a fifth year of college, I would be graduating next spring and it would only be one more winter. I was talking with my best friend while I was home for the weekend and my 21st birthday is coming up, and how once you're 21 there aren't many birthdays left to look forward to. This is the decade of life where it's time to starting thinking about jobs and moving and marriage and kids, and then to start actually doing those things. It's exciting but overwhelming at the same time.

Graduation is still two years away for me, but my friends and boyfriend are graduating next year, and my best friend will likely be engaged shortly after that. I'm starting to reevaluate my life goals. There are so many things I want to do before I settle down, and I don't plan on settling down for quite a while. There are too many things to do and see before I'm tied down with a house and kids. I feel like I'm so close to being a full on adult, and it makes me realize I am in no hurry for all of that responsibility. Freedom is the greatest asset, whether it's with money, time, or decisions. Right now I can make decisions that will give me freedom later on, and I can enjoy the freedom that I have now that comes with the lack of major responsibilities.

Carpe diem to the fullest.

Pumpkin Snickerdoodles

I love fall, it would be my favorite season if it didn't lead to winter. I love the colorful leaves, Halloween, and all of the apple and pumpkin based foods. I found this recipe on Pinterest last fall, and making these cookies may or may not be a main reason I'm currently in a relationship with my boyfriend. Seriously, that part is not a joke. They're relatively easy to make, especially if you have a mixer, and are great anytime of the year. I also really liked that these could be baked less for a chewier cookie, which goes perfectly with a glass of warm cider.

What you will need:

For the cookies:

3 3/4 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 large egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

For the coating:

1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
Dash of allspice

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

In a large bowl, beat together butter and sugars on medium speed until well combined. Next, still on medium speed, beat in pumpkin. Then, add the egg and vanilla extract. Lastly, add in the dry ingredients. Beat until combined, but do not over mix. Cover the dough, and refrigerate for one hour, until firm.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Line baking sheets with parchment paper. In a small bowl, mix together the sugar and spices for the sugar coating. Scoop dough (approximately 2 1/2 tablespoons) and roll into a ball. Roll the dough ball in the sugar mixture, and place on the lined baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches between each cookie. Take a drinking glass with a flat bottom and moisten with water. Dip the glass in the sugar mixture, and use it to flatten the dough balls. Re-sugar the glass as needed.

Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes. Remove when the centers of the cookies have set. Let cool on the baking pan for approximately 5 minutes, and then transfer to wire cooling racks to cool completely.
